Dental Bone Graft After Tooth Extraction: Costs, Healing Stages and Types
What Is a Dental Bone Graft?
A dental bone graft is a procedure where your dentist or oral surgeon adds bone material to your jawbone. This is often done after a tooth extraction to preserve the bone and prepare for future dental work, like implants.
Here’s a surprising fact: 25% of adults over 65 have lost all their teeth. If you’ve recently had a tooth extraction or are planning one, you might wonder about dental bone grafts. What are bone grafts? Do you need one? And how do you recover without losing your mind?
Dental bone grafting holds space in your jaw, so your own body can do the repair work. It’s like a scaffold where your bone tissue can grow and regenerate.
Why You Might Need a Dental Bone Graft
Dental Bone Grafting can be used to treat many situations like:
- Fill the vacant tooth socket following extraction.
- Enhance the size and fullness of your jawbone.
- Lift maxillary sinuses (the sinus cavities below your eyes and alongside your nose). In some situations, this is necessary before dental implants.
- Provide a strong foundation for dental implants.
- Restore your jaw before dentures.
- Fix fractured bone due to dental injury or traumatic extraction
- Secure and reinforce wobbly teeth.
Address bone loss caused by infections such as gum disease.
Dental Bone Graft Healing Stages
Healing after a bone graft takes time, but knowing what to expect can make the process less daunting. Here’s a breakdown:
Stage 1: Initial Healing (0-2 Weeks)
- Swelling and Discomfort: This is normal. Use ice packs and take prescribed painkillers.
- Soft Foods Only: Stick to mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies.
Stage 2: Bone Integration (2-6 Weeks)
- New Bone Growth: Your body starts integrating the graft material.
- Gentle Care: Avoid chewing on the graft site and follow your dentist’s instructions.
Stage 3: Full Healing (3-6 Months)
- Bone Maturation: The grafted bone strengthens enough to support implants or other dental work.
- Follow-Up Visits: Regular check-ups ensure everything is healing well.
The cost of a dental bone graft can vary widely depending on the type of graft and your location. Here’s a rough estimate:
- Autografts: 500−1,200
- Allografts: 300−1,000
- Xenografts: 400−1,200
- Synthetic Grafts: 300−800
Factors That Affect Cost
- Type of Graft: Autografts are usually more expensive.
- Dentist’s Experience: More experienced professionals may charge higher fees.

What Happens During a Dental Bone Graft?
The procedure is straightforward and usually done right after your tooth extraction. Here’s what to expect:
- Anesthesia: You’ll be numbed or sedated so that you won’t feel a thing.
- Graft Placement: The dentist adds bone graft material to the extraction site.
- Stitching Up: The area is stitched, and your body begins healing.
Types of Dental Bone Graft Materials
- Autografts: Bone taken from another part of your body.
- Allografts: Donor bone from a tissue bank.
- Xenografts: Bone from an animal source, usually a cow.
- Synthetic Grafts: Lab-made materials that mimic bone.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery After a Dental Bone Graft
Recovery is key to ensuring your bone graft heals appropriately. Here’s how to make it as smooth as possible:
What to Eat After a Bone Graft
- Soft Foods: Think mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies.
- Cold Foods: Ice cream (without chunks!) can soothe the area.
- Avoid Crunchy or Spicy Foods: These can irritate the extraction site.
Things to Avoid After a Bone Graft
- Smoking: It slows healing and increases the risk of complications.
- Straws: The suction can dislodge the blood clot.
- Vigorous Rinsing: Be gentle to avoid disturbing the graft.
What Patients Are Saying...
EXCELLENT Based on 173 reviews Posted on Tim McCantsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Please read this review, I’m going to start off with Dr. Siddiqi, awesome and extremely knowledgeable and professional, very informative and gave NO OVER SELL just the facts to put me at ease with what will work best for me and my budget. My teeth were in sad shape, no dentist visit in 27 years, during which endured chipped front teeth, major coffee and smoke stains, horrible. I was expecting them to push for full implants, other teeth work (which I need) before they would address my real concern which was my smile. They took the x-rays, photos (very high tech and up-to-date equipment) and we discussed my option with insurance and out of pocket cost (very reasonable) and moved forward with the treatment that I actually came there for, did the dental cleaning, opted for the laser teeth whitening, since I wanted my front chipped teeth repair to look its best, and sure enough Dr. Siddiqi did a phenomenal job, I am so pleased to actually gladly smile in public again. All in all, exam (insurance covered that) but whitening and cosmetic to repair front chipped teeth $720 bucks, you’re not going to find that type of professional quality, service, and price any where near Cypress. And not to be amiss, the staff, the hygienists, manager, everyone who assisted me were exceptional. I have more work to be done and can’t wait to visit them again. Please give them a call, you won’t regret it.Posted on Nathaniel WalkerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Greatest experience ever. Thank you Toni , the masked lady, who took the pictures, Doc, and Alecia. I am grateful for your service and support on helping me recover from my neglect of my teeth. You really helped me understand everything I need to be more healthier with dental care. I have insurance so I paid a co pay of $50. Also if you make an appointment in the office, you will pay a deposit to reserve your spot. I paid because Im a busy man. I was also given time to think about my own medical plan. I didn’t feel pressured. The atmosphere was very nice. I would use higher seats for people who are older. The seating area will hold more than 10 people. You’re also offered a refreshment. Most Importantly. It’s so clean and smells great. 👍 My wife and I will be a client. See you soon.Posted on Gabriel LopezTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After experiencing a cracked tooth and suffering excruciating pain, I felt nothing but comfort from the staff at Cypress Towne Dental. Toni answered my call with high energy and full of empathy when learning about my tooth ache. The staff greeted me with smiles and comfort and the Dr.s were very thorough with all the options and very detailed with the procedures. The tooth had to be removed and the Dr.s did so without any incident. Overall, I was very pleased with the staff and look forward to making Cypress Towne Dental my primary dentist.
